SkillsUSA Advisors,
Last night at the June meeting, your Board of Advisors voted to host a meeting in August for all of you to come together before school starts and share in Fall plans and seek your input and participation in them. It would be a chance to meet the new State Director (hopefully in place by then) and offer some training tips for you to share with your students and maybe to help you organize your chapter earlier in the school year for maximum benefit to your students.
This gathering is scheduled for Monday August 18th at the WESD in Salem, starting at 10 AM –ending about 3 PM and of course would include lunch.
Please put the date on your calendar and let me know if you can attend, thanks.
Have a great Summer and know that you are appreciated!!

SkillsUSA Advisors,
WOW! that was fast—where did the year go? It’s time for school to be out and for you to rest up and get your strength back.(ya, right)
We’ve had another great SkillsUSA year—Our very excited All Girl State Officer Team started the year with State Officer Tours and regional events in each region and a “bursting at the seams” Fall Conference, with participation by our Oregon National Guard and Katie Mooney, the National Staff Person responsible for Alumni. Then we ended the year with a huge auditorium full of students at Spring Conference and visiting National Officer Shelby Adsero. Our membership dipped a bit this year to 1054 members, in spite of our efforts early on to significantly increase. We picked up a few new or reactivated chapters, but lost about the same number, so we are about the same as last year. Thank you to all of you who enrolled as Professional Members, that number did increase this year.
This year the Lowe’s Corporation gave National SkillsUSA a million dollars to use in local schools and communities. After Glendale High School won a Lowe’s School Improvement Grant last summer, two more advisors applied for grants and got them—Mark Lynch at the Sabin Center and Brad Yates at Santiam High School each received $10,000 for community improvement projects. At the State level we landed a grant to start the Teamworks Contest event and wow what an event it was. On Saturday April 26th four teams of Construction Students gathered at the Roseburg Lowe’s Store to build a comprehensive structure to demonstrate their skills. Next year it promises to be bigger and better. If you don’t know what Teamworks is, check it out on your new Tech Standards CD.
Spring Conference and the Skills Championships went well. The State Officers did an outstanding job of running the Sessions and we expanded some events to include a few more students. Thank you to all who were involved and encouraged students to participate in the Tech Prep Showcase, it was bigger and better.
Now we’re off to Kansas City for Nationals, with individuals and teams entered in 47 different events and 112 total people registered from Oregon. Niki Clausen will again be leading one of the Chapter Management Seminars at the SkillsUSA University and at least one other seminar, plus assisting in the training at the State Officer 101 Training. It promises to be an exciting week.
For next year—we need a larger Board of Advisors team to assist in organization operations and events. We do have a full team of excited State Officers , so watch out, they are planning some exciting events to help you be successful in your Chapter. On the agenda are Advisor Trainings, Chapter Visitations and Regional Events, as well as Fall and Spring Conferences. It should be a great year for every Chapter to get involved early and share the SkillsUSA Experience with an even larger group of students.
Have a great Summer and thanks for all you did to make SkillsUSA Oregon what it is for your kids and thanks for helping me all of these 34 years in VICA/SkillsUSA, it’s been a great ride. Dick |

Advisors---here’s a bit of heads up information about the National Conference--in case your student competitor wins the Gold in a National Qualifying event: They will come at you all excited, waving the application that will be attached to their Certificate. You will need to make the decision to go, or not to go to Nationals, very quickly. So, please understand the following and maybe ask questions before the awards session: First: YOU will need to travel with him/her to Kansas City. Second: You and your student(s) must each complete the NLSC 1 form which will be attached to their Gold Medal Certificate and you will each need to send the $175 registration fee with the form to the SkillsUSA State Office by April 18th. Sorry for the short turnaround—delays cause a ripple effect that is unacceptable. The total cost of this experience varies, but is approximately: Registration $175 each Lodging About $115 per room per night (so, if four students share a two bed room , it works out to about $23 per person per night or $125 for the five nights Airfare Usually about $500 (this year may be higher because of fuel prices) you will need to fly into Kansas City, MO (MCI) to arrive on Monday June 23. You will need to depart on Sat. the 28th. Food Most students can eat for about $20 to $25 per day. Make Checks payable to: “SkillsUSA Oregon” and please include your T-Shirt size in the appropriate space On the Application Form. Please return the form and fees by April 18, 2008 to: SkillsUSA Oregon 2611 Pringle Rd. SE Salem, OR 97302 If your Second Place Winner becomes eligible to compete at Nationals (because the First Place can’t go)—you will be notified by April 22nd and then need to submit forms and fees by April 30th. Thanks for all you do for your students, Dick |

SkillsUSA Advisors, National SkillsUSA has put out the call for Courtesy Corp Members for the 2008 National Conference in Kansas City, June 22-28
Courtesy Corp Members must be SkillsUSA Members who are currently enrolled (or have been enrolled this school year) in a local chapter and who are not competing in a National Contest. Students of course must be accompanied by their advisor, arrive in KC on Sunday morning the 22nd and stay the week at the Courtesy Corp Hotel (not with the Oregon contingent). In return for their services, Nationals covers meals and lodging and waives the Conference Registration Fee, plus provides several special shirts for each member. So this is an opportunity for a few students and an advisor (from one school) to participate in the National experience for only the price of the airfare. I am telling you this now, so you have opportunity to consider this service before I am hurriedly asking for Courtesy Corp people right after awards at State Conference
If Oregon sends members to Nationals as Courtesy Corp---it will be two or more students, with one advisor, all from one school. Ask questions!! |

SkillsUSA Advsiors, Change is hard, I know---thank you to all of you for being patient with the online contest registration this year. As I look through the listings, I find that many of you have not yet submitted your registration on the website and I wanted to remind you that the site will close this weekend, so please complete your Conference Registration this week and be sure to click on Save Registration ---there is not a Submit button on this site. Just to clarify—when you are entering a student to compete in a contest---be sure you select “contestant” as a registration type. If your student wants to enter a skill contest and a leadership contest, put the skill contest in the “Blue” area and the leadership contest code in the “Grey” area (at the bottom of the page). And----you can call me anytime for assistance, |

Advisors, Your Board of Advisors has asked that I remind (or inform) you that from time to time it is necessary or expedient to hold a particular contest off site at a time other than at the state contest. These contests are usually demonstration events or particular to a school that has a program that none other has and are allowed in order to offer the National Contest experience to more students. Again this year we are holding the Cosmetology, Nail Care and Facial contest events at Sabin Center, because that school is the only one in our association with a program that supports those training areas. They will be represented at the State Conference in the Techprep Showcase to demonstrate what they do in their program. Of course students from other chapters would be welcome to compete if they were members and had been properly trained. A Chapter Advisor would contact the host school and make arrangements for a students participation. Two other contests this year that are to be held other than on Conference contest day are: the new Teamworks event (all construction teachers have been involved in that one) and the Engineering Technology Demonstration Event which will be displayed as a Techprep Showcase at the Conference. An FYI: the Collision Repair Technology Contest is being split this year at Nationals into a Collision Repair event and a separate Refinishing (painting) event. We will be performance testing students in both of these areas through our usual Collision Repair Contest. So, for instance, if you have a student that is skilled in painting but not in repair, you might enter that student anyway and the Technical Committee will sort out the results. Call me if you have questions. Thanks---stay tuned for late breaking news--

Advisors---here’s your second reminder for today---the membership deadline is screaming up on us and I know you don’t like to disappoint your students. Only half of our active chapters have enrolled so far and our current membership is significantly lower than half of last year,(we have only at 450 students so far) so I hope the next two weeks will be a flurry of membership activity. If we are to reach our growth goal, we need all of the chapters who have not enrolled yet to come on board with more members than last year and we need those who have already submitted rosters to do an additional roster. Congratulations to the David Douglas, Saint Helens and Linn Benton Chapters for already enrolling five more members than last year. NEWS FLASH for Welding Instructors!!!! It’s official—the Welding Fabrication Team event Gold Team will be going to Nationals this Year---let the fundraising begin!! |

The big change here is that this year we are opening up Conference and Contest Registration to Online-- Website submission. So, please read this entire packet carefully and call if you have questions. And---please distroy any old registration materials, they are of no value, thanks, Dick |

Alumni---all former members of SkillsUSA and VICA are invited to join the National Alumni Association (it’s a free membership). We would like to hear from you and find out what you are doing these days and if you might like to get involved again in this great organization. At the state level we are always in need of helpers at the State Conference/contests and on advisory committees. At the National level there are many opportunities to participate on the contest Technical Committees and be a part of the Alumni Association. Contact the State Alumni Coordinator, Josh Griggs at
